LifeWorks Mentoring Mentor Recruitment Process
Mentor Qualifications
To qualify as a LifeWorks Mentor, you must be a successful and caring adult interested in helping youth. We ask that you are open and comfortable with your sexual orientation and gender identity, and live a life consistent with that comfort. Mentors must have achieved success in the five achievement areas of the LifePlan:
Wellness |
Education |
Career |
Home |
Personal Development |
Mentors must make a minimum commitment for one year and be able to devote a minimum 5 hours each month working with their client to achieve the goals of their LifePlan. While we welcome all adults who understand and appreciate the particular challenges growing up as a lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) person in our society, our youth have strongly and consistently requested Mentors who are also lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender themselves. For this reason we can only accept Mentor applications from LGBT adults at this time.
How to become a LifeWorks Mentor:
- Application: Please fill out the LifeWorks Mentor Application and submit it online. You can also call us or email us to receive an application in the mail. Once we receive your form, we will review it and schedule time to talk with you.
- Interview: You will have a scheduled interview with a LifeWorks Mentoring staff. The interview will include personal questions aimed at determining if your lifestyle, values, and ideas about volunteerism. We will also check your references on your application during this time.
- Approval: LifeWorks Mentoring will conduct background checks and obtain your DMV record to ensure that there is no serious criminal activity or other offenses that make you a risk to our organization or our youth.
- Training: If you are selected, then you will be scheduled for our mentor training program. Typically, mentor training will take place on two consecutive Saturdays with one training session in between.
- Match: You will fill out survey to help us determine the best fit among our LifeWorks Mentoring Clients. Once selected, a meeting is scheduled for you to get acquainted.
- Start: You will begin mentoring by setting boundaries and expectations, getting to know each other and beginning to work on LifePlan of the LifeWorks Client. Meetings should be done in-person, by phone or email. You should spend as much quality time as needed to get to know each other and establish a solid mentor relationship.
- Feedback: We will contact you weekly to check in on your progress. This is an excellent time to ask questions, get referrals and ideas, solve problems, and discuss anything that is on your mind. If you are struggling in any way with your role as a Mentor, call us immediately so that we may resolve the issue(s) in a timely manner.
- Advice: We need your input! We offer continual training for you and fellow mentors. The content will be guided by feedback from you and fellow mentors.
